National Bike to School day/Fill the Racks! tomorrow

Capture - final poster 2This year our Fill the Racks event is the same day as the National Bike to School Day – May 8th 2013

To see who’s biking across the nation, go to www.walkbiketoschool.org/go/whos-biking/2013.

Tomorrow’s event might possibly be our biggest event ever! With a weather forecast of 60 degrees and sunny by 8:00 in the morning, kids and parents are excited to ride! We could have up to 1,000 students and parents out biking to school so hold on to your bikes and ride safe!

Police and community volunteers have been called and asked to provide extra eyes for safety. Safety reminders like this one have been sent out to schools and parents https://sr2smoscow.com/2013/04/27/safety-reminders-for-fill-the-racks-2013/

All schools have received 3-5 helmets for any students who arrive to school without a helmet, and bike tokens for students to add to their walk/bike backpack chains they’ve been collecting tokens on since February’s Fill the Racks event.

Below are the planned events at each of our 7 participating Moscow Schools:

Palouse Prairie School – Parent and UI volunteers are joining in bike trains to bike safely to school and cross Highway 95 safely.

Moscow Charter School – The art teacher, also a bike enthusiast, Tim Gregory is organizing a bike rodeo at their school. Tim has also been visiting each school individually to offer free bike tune-ups for their students last week so a huge thank you shout out to him!
Russell – 5th grade student volunteers are going to help younger students attach bike tokens to their backpacks.
McDonald Elementary – Mayor Chaney and members of the Palouse Bike Racing group will be giving out bike tokens and helping students attach them to their backpacks.
Lena Whitmore – UI Vandals cycling team and PCEI volunteer Jen H. will be helping give out bike tokens in the morning.
Moscow Middle School – Participants will write their names on raffle tickets and entering into a drawing for bike gear from Paradise Creek Bikes and Safe Routes to School. MMS students that volunteer to help with this event will receive activity points for school. We wanted to have some BMX bikers come show off their tricks but that was cancelled because of liability concerns.
West Park – Bike Rodeo during lunch hour is where bike tokens will be given out at West Park, not in the morning on their way to school like the other schools. Mr. Marineau, Rick Markley (the PE teacher), TJay from Paradise Creek Bikes and Brooke Lowry are going to do a Bike Rodeo at 11:30-12:30 for the students to practice their bike skills.

Have fun everyone! And please be safe!!!
