PRESS RELEASE

City of Moscow, University of Idaho and Safe Routes to School Celebrate National Bike to School Day

May 3, 2013 (Moscow, Idaho) — The City of Moscow and the Safe Routes to School (SR2S) program are encouraging students to bike, roll, or glide to school on Wednesday, May 8, 2013. Fill the Racks in celebration of National Bike to School Day.

SR2S is encouraging all Moscow K – 8 students and parents of students to bike and/or walk to school on Wednesday, May 8. For students who don’t have a bike, any mode of active travel will do. If you live a far distance from your school, park and walk locations are set up around schools so students and parents can walk, bike, or scoot part of the way. Find park and walk locations on the large laminated map in your school entrance, or on our SR2S website (www.SR2Smoscow.com/maps). SR2S encourages students to travel to school in “Bike Trains” or “Walking School Buses” as an enjoyable and safe way to travel. SR2S also always encourages carpooling and riding the bus in efforts to decrease emissions and to increase safety around schools.

Bike backpack tokens will be given out to participants this year at the elementary schools. Raffle tickets for bike locks and bike helmets will be given out to Moscow Middle School students the morning of the event.

When it comes to safety, parents and guardians are the best judges of children’s ability to bike to school. Find bike safety tips and helmet fitting tips at the SR2S website www.sr2smoscow.com under the category of "Safety.” Parents and guardians are always encouraged to teach their children how to get to their destinations safely by riding and walking with them. Police and law enforcement will be present in our community as they are all other school days. Please drive slowly and look out for children.

If you have questions about this event or would like to volunteer, please contact Brooke Lowry, Safe Routes Coordinator, by email at blowry.
